Artist Statement:
My paintings in this exhibit began during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, I saw a newspaper tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing in July 1969. Those images of the moon’s surface became a clue as to what I was feeling…”Anywhere but here.”
After an initial group of nine paintings was completed, I began one painting after another, versions of which expressed my vision and feeling. Soon, I had a group of paintings that would express a time of isolation, calm, and concern, but without much color.
Now, with that series of paintings completed, color and energetic mark-making began appearing in my work. The paintings you see in this exhibit express a full range of feelings experienced during the pandemic time period, marks and color that reveal a remarkable time seen and felt by all.
